Barren County KY I.R.S. Tax Assessments Sept 1862 through 1866.

The US Congress passed a law in 1862 initiating the I.R.S. Tax Assessments to pay for the Civil War. This ran through 1895 and then was abolished. The individual tax statements were ordered to be destroyed but the assessor's reports were to be saved. Those that survived include, for Barren County, Sept 1862 through 1866 only. In 1862 there was no county designation on the taxes, just the state. Thankfully Barren County's report for 1863 included the taxes paid in Sept 1862. Shown are 4 charts, one for each year as the charts changed year by year. They show the following: Date taxes paid, name of individual being taxed, Location (county and/or town), the item being taxed, sometimes the quantity and the tax paid. Items taxed during this time frame included income from a business, liquor, carriages & harnesses, gold watches and pianos. Farmers were not taxed, only those deriving an income from a business. This included lawyers, doctors, dentists, retail dealers, retail liquor dealers, peddlers, owners of stallions or jacks, dry good stores and hotel keepers primarily. 38 pages which includes also a detailed explanation of the tax law and full-name index. $10.00

Barren County 1817 Tax List.

Most transcribed lists give the names in alphabetical order. This book shows them as they appeared on the original records. Taken from digitized copies of the tax list provided by the KY Department of Library and Archives. Shows names, acreage, nearest waterway and counts of white males over 21, slaves over 16, total slaves and horses. 74 pages including full-name index. $10.00

Barren County 1820 Tax Records.

For the first time transcribed, this year showed changes. Monroe County had become a new county so is not shown, but Barren County is growing. Shown in the order the names appeared on the original records, information included is: Name of the tax collector in his military district, name of tax payer, number of acres owned (if any), rate of land, nearest waterway, number of white males 21 and older, number of black slaves 16 and older, total number of slaves and total number of horses. Researchers can more easily identify family members who paid their taxes at the same location. Over 1600 tax payers are shown. 60 pages with full-name index. $10.00

Barren Co Tax Records 1799-1817 and 1819, Surnames A through D.

This will be the first volume in a series of tax records which will, when finished, replace my old series of 3 volumes that covered separate time frames. The reader can now trace their ancestor from the first time they were taxed in the county through their last appearance in this time frame. The names are presented alphabetically in chronological order through the years. The earliest years show the name, the number of white males over 21 and white males over 16. In the next records, the number of male slaves and horses are added and the location of the land. The newest records show all this plus the number of acres taxed. Those who did not own land are also shown as they were taxed also. I have attempted to put the variant spellings of surnames together as spellings varied year by year. There are over 8,150 names shown. There are no extant records for 1818. 163 pages. $20.00

Barren County Tax Book 1860-1865.

This 89 page book was found in the County Clerk's office. It contains the records maintained by the County Clerk during this time frame and shows the following: Name of head of household, acreage (but not the location), the number of slaves, the number of horses, and number of tithes. Then it gives the amount of tax paid starting in 1865 and going backward to 1860. There are notes if paid late, if paid by someone else and other notations. The book is in two sections, likely for the two districts. The names are in alphabetical order by the first initial of the last name. These are photocopies of the entire book and fills a gap between the 1860 and 1870 census. $10.00
