Barren County KY Constable and Marshall Bonds 1799-1877.

Many men in the county served as constables and some as marshalls over the year; a position that was respected and they were supposed to take the position when appointed. The actual bond book did not start until 1853; before (and after) that, the appointments and resignations were recorded in the County Order Books. I have transcribed the bond information from 1799-1851 and from 1853-1887 have included photocopies of the actual bonds. Information shown includes the name of the individual; his security (bondsman), sometimes witnesses and where they lived. 195 pages including a full-name index. $18.00

Barren Co. Order Book 9. June 1857 through December 1863.

Times were changing during this time frame. Metcalfe Co had formed, the old settlers were dying off. But the most dramatic event was the Civil War as it effected Barren Co. People were joining the "so called Provincial Government" or the "Confederate Cause." Positions were left vacated among Constables, Administrators, Executors & Surveyors. Judge W. R. McFerran ruled over the Court for most of this period and had to ask others to step in and take the vacated offices. There were other things going on - a divorce where the father placed his 3 years old child in apprenticeship, another who refused to claim a child as his own. Women are more frequently being named Guardians of their children or taking over handling estates. The death rate is growing by 1863 rapidly. Some activities were coming to an almost halt during this period of the war. This large book is 214 pages long and includes a 29 page index with over 10,000 entries. $25.00
