Ednatha Bowles

Ednatha Bowles was the oldest daughter of John and Celia (Sally) Bowles. She was born in Kentucky, almost certainly in Barren County, about 1815.

Her birth year is based on a study of census records. In the 1820 Barren Co KY census John Bowles is listed with a daughter and three sons, all under the age of 10. Ednatha is the girl listed. The 1830 census lists John with a girl between 10-15. This is Ednatha again. Then in 1840 John is listed with a daughter between 20-30; again this is Ednatha, showing that she is living at home with her parents. The 1850 census shows her age as 34, and the 1860 census says she is 44. Finally, the 1870 census says she is 55.

There is no indication that she ever married. She continued to live with her parents until her mother's death; then with her father until his death about 1861. After that it appears that she moved in with her sister, Martha Ann Nunnally, wife of Jefferson Nunnally. No record has been found for her in the 1880 census, so it would seem that she died before then.

Ednatha's unusual name was spelled a variety of ways in the census records, but her great-niece, Anna Lucille Bowles spelled it as Ednatha in a handwritten document written about 1951, so that's what we will use.
